The flexibility and strength of tubing constructed of high density polyethylene material and connected by PEX fittings offers many advantages over plumbing arrangements employing metal or rigid plastic pipes. PEX pipes do not corrode and withstand cold temperatures without becoming brittle. They cost less than metal or plastic piping. They are much easier to install because they are stored in spools and need less fittings.
The flexible pipes are not made brittle by low temps. Polyethylene tubes are less pricey than metal pipes and are easier to put in because they do not use as many fittings as metal or rigid plastic schemes. Since soldering is not used with PEX arrangements there are no nasty fumes or the risks associated with utilizing a torch.
PEX tubing is wrapped in spools. Because reels weigh less than cut metal or plastic pipes, they are easier to store and cost less to ship. Tubing can be unwound from the spools with no need for coupling fittings. Installation is much quicker and cheaper when it does not involve the installation of pipe.
There are a variety of joining methods used in installing PEX arrangements. Some of these techniques are proprietary and several require special tools. Basically, the fitting is positioned over the tube or in the tube and then a clamp is crimped around the pipe or fitting making a tight fit. The rings can be constructed of various metals or plastic depending on he connection method.
The tools you will use when installing PEX are a PEX pipe cutter, a main crimping tool and a de-crimping tool. The PEX pipe cutter comes in different sizes for 1/2″ and 3/4″ size tubes. Rings are crimped utilising the crimping tool. The de-crimping tool is employed for removing rings from pipes or fittings.
Fittings can be made of brass, bronze, copper or engineered plastic but the most familiar material in PEX plumbing is brass. The fittings have ridges designed to form a tight fit. When the ring is crimped over the tube or fitting a high-pressure seal is formed.
Water plumbing schemes that take advantage of PEX tubing and PEX fittings have certain benefits. The materials are less expensive than metal and plastic pipes. Fewer fittings are required. The Installation process is simpler and quicker. Your system will never corrode or crack so it will last longer with fewer potential problems.
